Getting Started with SCS900

Target Audience:
The target attendees for this class are construction surveyors, site supervisors and foreman, grade checkers, and persons responsible for managing 3D jobsite data and/or field crews. This is an introductory course and is intended for new users of the software

Prerequisites:
General computer OS knowledge and experience with general construction staking and grading is recommended. Experience with GPS and robotic total station is recommended. Bringing a laptop computer is recommended but not required.

Course Description:
This course will provide instructions for operating the SCS900 software using GPS and robotic total station instruments. This is intended for the beginner user who may have used an older version of SCS900 or a first time user of the latest release - v3.70. We will cover the basic fundamentals for setting up the controller and associated files along with general stakeout and measurement tasks. It will also include the integration with Trimble Business Center-HCE and how to transfer files to and from the office. Printed study guides and sample training files will be provided.

Objectives:

  • Understand file and folder structure on the PC and the data collector
  • Setup and install the PC emulator
  • Setup a GPS base and rover – and Robotic Total Station
  • Create job sites, designs and work orders
  • GPS site calibrations and best practices
  • Measure site features and surfaces
  • Measure and compute stockpile volumes
  • Stake out points, lines, surfaces and roads
  • COGO functions
  • Office Synchronizer setup and use
  • Create designs and work orders with Business Center-HCE
  • Use the SCS900 report utility
  • Create machine files for GCS900 system

It will target users currently utilizing Trimble Site Positioning (SCS900) and Grade Control (GCS, PCS, DPS, and Caterpillar Accugrade) systems. This is an introductory course and is intended for new users.

Prerequisites:
General computer OS knowledge and experience with CAD and surface files. A laptop computer is required, and attendees must have the current release of Trimble Business Center – HCE installed prior to class start. Visit http://heavycivil.trimble.com/businesscenterdownload.html
to download the install file if needed. Experience with SCS900 and GCS900 is recommended but not necessary.

Course Description:
This course will provide an introduction to the Business Center-HCE core software and focus on the Field Data Module that is a free download from Trimble. Business Center will be used in conjunction with the site positioning hardware and machines that you currently use. We will cover the basic fundamentals of setting up jobsite files for GCS900 and SCS900 and will focus on the workflow that assumes 3D models for use on site are provided. We will learn the process of creating the appropriate files in the appropriate formats for both systems. Sample training files will be provided.

Objectives:

  • Understand file and folder structure on the PC, data collector and machine
  • Basic overview of the software including menus, commands and help system
  • Setup job templates and customize settings
  • Import design files, GPS calibration and control points
  • View and check your data in 3D for quality control
  • Create job sites, designs and work orders for SCS900
  • Create GCS900 Machine control files in the correct format
  • Use Office Synchronizer to move files between field and office
  • Use the SCS900 report utility to view work done in the field and create custom reports
  • Explore the various export options

This is an intermediate course and is intended for users who would like to create jobsite design models on their own.

Prerequisites:
General computer OS knowledge and experience with CAD and surface files, as well as construction plans and basic 3D model understanding. A laptop computer is required, and attendees must have the current release of Trimble Business Center – HCE installed prior to class start. Course Description:
This course will focus on the Data Prep, Surface Tools and Image Manager Modules. Efficient construction projects begin with accurate data preparation. We will use Business Center – HCE to ensure data is clean, up-to-date and delivered in the right format. Printed study guides and sample training files will be provided.

Objectives:

  • In-depth overview of the software including menus, commands, settings and help system
  • Set up project templates and customize for the appropriate job type
  • Import multiple data sets (PDF, Autocad, Microstation, LandXML)
  • Rapidly extract CAD data from vector PDF files
  • Clean up CAD data with project cleanup tool
  • Use CAD tools to join, trim, extend and offset lines
  • Elevate contours, pads, curblines and points with automated elevating tools
  • Create surface models for grading or survey layout
  • Use advanced surface modeling and editing tools
  • Create alignments and corridors
  • Export data to the appropriate format

It will target users currently familiar with Business Center Core Module and the Data Prep Workflow. This is an intermediate to advanced course and is intended for users who would like to use PDF plans or CAD files to estimate project quantities, pre or post bid.

Prerequisites:
Business Center-HCE Data Prep Class. Experience with CAD files, construction plans and 3D models is recommended. A laptop computer is required, and attendees must have the current release of Trimble Business Center – HCE installed prior to class start. Course Description:

This course will focus on using the Takeoff Module. Construction projects are successful with accurate quantity reporting. We will use Business Center–HCE to complete a project takeoff from start to finish using only a PDF or CAD file. Printed study guides and sample training files will be provided.

Objectives:

  • Set up a project template specific to the takeoff module
  • Import PDF or CAD files and standardize layers
  • Define specific materials, thicknesses and assign to site improvements
  • Define topsoil stripping and re-spread quantities
  • Build original ground, finish grade and subgrade surfaces
  • Create sub-surface data from boring logs
  • Create cut-fill maps

Course Description:
This course will focus on creating 3D corridor models for use in machine control and roadway stakeout. It will also focus on using PDF cross sections to create a corridor as well as quantity reporting. Printed study guides and sample training files will be provided.

Objectives:

  • Learn how to create 3D roadway models from various data format sources
  • Create horizontal and vertical alignments from existing cad lines or plan sheet data
  • On-screen digitize cross-section drawings from a vector PDF to create a corridor surface
  • Convert CAD cross-sections to create a corridor surface
  • Map multiple material layers (subgrades) to stored cross-sections distinguished by layer
  • Create templates and superelevations
  • Generate average end area earthwork reports
  • Calculate material quantities and earthwork volumes throughout a road project
  • Export designs to SCS900 for stakeout and GCS900/PCS900 for machine control/paving
